As a busy mom and a photographer constantly surrounded by families, I know how valuable it is to have a few surefire activities in your back pocket – especially for those long summer days or chillier weekends when “What are we doing today?” rings out before 8 a.m.

We all want meaningful time with our kids, something beyond screens and snacks. But it has to be realistic too, right? Ideally, fun shouldn’t feel like a second job to plan.

So today I’m sharing four of my absolute favorite kid-friendly Columbia, SC kids activities that I either personally love or that my clients rave about. All of these can spark joy for little ones ages 1 through 7 and offer moms a chance to breathe deeply, soak in the moment, and maybe even snap a few frames of joy themselves.

And if you time, be sure to visit Leo’s Landing, an all-inclusive park on the other side of Saluda Shoals that offers fun for all ages and abilities.

3. EdVenture Children’s Museum

Hello, indoor bliss. When the weather’s too hot or too rainy for outdoor play, EdVenture is your go-to.

This Columbia-based museum is full of hands-on exhibits designed exactly for preschool and early elementary-aged imaginations. Your kids can explore:

• A kid-sized grocery store
• A fire truck to “drive”
• Water play, art rooms, and pretend hospital areas

4. Virginia Hylton Park in Lexington, SC

Tucked right in the heart of the Lexington community, newly renovated Virginia Hylton Park is ideal when you’re craving simplicity but still want something special.

• A creative, soft ground playground area
• A simple splash pad where children can play in small 3 foot fountains
• Calm landscaping that lets you exhale a bit
• Public restrooms and plenty of parking

For Lexington area families, this is a regular favorite for photo sessions and mom meetups. I’ve met clients here for birthday portraits, family connections, and fun lifestyle sessions. It offers a great variety of settings and backgrounds.

Bonus Tip: Bring bubbles, a light snack, and a blanket for an easy picnic. Trust me, the memories practically make themselves.
