Those first cries of life are some of the most special sounds to an expecting parent. The anticipation that comes with meeting your little one for the first time puts those butterfly feelings in the best of us! And even though it can be a bit intimidating to realize the responsibility of taking care of an infant (who depends on you for everything!), it’s one of the sweetest times, which is why I so enjoy being able to document it for those walking this journey.
Meet sweet baby John. I had the absolute pleasure of photographing this family from the time they found out they were pregnant to when Leigh was in the last trimester of her pregnancy, and now that their little guy is in the world, I got to document his first few days of life. It has truly been a sweet journey to witness.
I think what I’ve appreciated most about getting to know this family is their heart for the Lord. Scott is a pastor at a local church in Durham and works with youth, so they are quite involved with their community and feel strongly about making a difference in people’s lives. I’m constantly seeing updates about different mission trips and opportunities to serve others in the area that they do regularly, and I know they prioritize other people and God above themselves.
Baby John did so well during his session, and we were able to photograph some sweet moments, including his little yawn. But I think I enjoy most watching how a new mom takes in the beauty of her child. There’s such a sense of nurturing and knowledge knowing her whole life has been changed by this little person in front of her who depends on her for everything. It’s watching that love between a mother and child that melts my heart every time :)
With dads, one of my favorite moments to capture is when they look with complete adoration at their sweet child. It’s a sense of pride and protection that I often see. And when dads show their gentle spirit as they work to soothe their crying little one, that’s the best :)
Something else I enjoy documenting for parents is the nursery they have prepared for their little one. When putting together storybooks, these images offer details that create a story about their baby’s first few days. As time moves on, it can be hard to remember what life was like with a newborn. How did we get by day to day? When parents look back on these images, all of those memories and feelings come back as they remember nostalgically what life was like in those first few weeks with their new baby.
To Leigh & Scott – I’m so excited for you all and all that you have to look forward to. Thank you all so much for trusting me to document this journey for you – it’s been an honor :)
